Event Description

Abstraction (n.) 1- The quality of dealing with ideas rather than events. 2- The freedom from representational qualities in art.

This spring, jorsTAP will play with this definition in its show, Abstraction. In a non-traditional performance space within Fulton Market, jorsTAP will perform a reboot of its previous show, Rackets, in which dancers literally turn the way viewers perceive tap dance upside-down. In maintaining its collaborative roots, the company will once again team up with a series of artists to challenge audiences' understanding of tap dance and art as a whole.

Abstraction will be jorsTAP’s fourth installment of collaborative art with the talented painter David Lee Csicsko, this time transporting audiences back to 1920’s France. There will also be a piece choreographed by Michele Dunleavy, who was the first person to expose Artistic Director Kendra Jorstad to the idea that tap can be paired with other forms of movement and art. jorsTAP will also be partnering with the musician Leslie Beukelman, who will be arranging the music for the show. Fitting with the theme of Abstraction, the dancers’ choreography will inspire Beukelman’s music, rather than the traditional approach of the music inspiring the movement.

Abstraction will be just that: an experience that tests the limits of the definition of art. So buckle up - or even stand and take it all in - because this show will be a night to remember.
