Cerqua Rivera Dance Theatre (CRDT) is seeking MALE and FEMALE dancers for our season featuring new creations from River North Dance Chicago alumni: Sherry Zunker (artistic director 1990-2001), Stephanie Martinez (founding dancer/soloist), and Wilfredo Rivera (founding dancer/soloist). Corner Sketches, a Tribute to Miles Davis suite to feature choreography from CRDT artistic director Wilfredo Rivera and resident choreographers Marc Macaranas (Lucky Plush Productions, DanceWorks Chicago, Luna Negra) and Raphaelle Ziemba (MOMENTA, Hedwig Dances).

Skills/experience: exceptional contemporary dance training, performance experience, strong partnering skills, improvisation, desire to collaborate

Commitment: February 16 - October 8, 2016. Rehearsals Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9:30AM - 2:30PM.

Two contracted work periods — Winter/Spring and Fall/Summer. The season consists of 20 performances across Chicago (plus touring opportunities) and culminates in 6 performances over two weekends at two landmark Chicago venues.

Compensation: All rehearsals and performances are paid. We offer a highly competitive rehearsal rate and performance fee.

Cerqua Rivera Dance Theatre is a creative and performing arts company focused on fusing contemporary choreography with original/live music and projected visual design, and our themes often deal with matters of social impact in contemporary culture. Our process is 100% built on creative collaboration with a driving goal to bring our choreographic process outside of our rehearsal studio and into our community. 

2016 Lead Artists’ Biographies

Sherry Zunker is an established director, choreographer, and master teacher whose work covers the concert dance realm, musical theater, corporate entertainment, production shows, television, video and film. From 1990 – 2001 Sherry was the Artistic Director of River North Dance Chicago. As Artistic Director she choreographed numerous works for the company, including the signature piece "Reality of a Dreamer," which became the finale piece for the Emmy award-winning televised documentary of the same name. Sherry has set choreography on dance companies including the Joffrey Ballet and Giordano Dance Chicago. Her work is familiar to thousands of people beyond Chicago through her tenure as a creator, director and choreographer on over 35 productions for the cruise ship industry. From 2011 to 2014 Sherry directed “Chicago, the Musical” for Royal Caribbean’s Broadway venture. Sherry is the founder of BeMoved®, a company passionate about sharing the joy of dance with people of all movement abilities.

Choreographer Stephanie Martinez, winner of a 2015 3Arts Award, brings over 30 years of professional experience to Cerqua Rivera Dance Theatre. She has been a featured dancer on stage, film, and television. She was founding member of River North Dance Chicago and featured soloist with the company for 17 years, during which she was honored with a Ruth Page Award for Outstanding Performance. She has set choreography on Luna Negra, Thodos Dance Chicago, Same Planet/Different World, and Visceral Dance among others. In 2015 Stephanie was also honored by The Joffrey Ballet of Chicago in Winning Works: Choreographers of Color, and she will be setting works on the Sacramento Ballet, Ballet Hispanico among others and various university programs in addition to Cerqua Rivera Dance Theatre in the coming year.

CRDT Artistic Director Wilfredo Rivera was a founding member of and former soloist with River North Dance Chicago. Recipient of an After Dark Award for outstanding choreography for "The American Plan" (2001), a Jeff Citation for original choreography in Bailiwick Theater's production of Nagasaki Dust (1997), and the Cliff Dwellers Body of Work Choreography Award (2009). Wilfredo is a featured soloist in River North Dance Chicago's Emmy Award-winning television documentary “Reality of a Dreamer”. In 2016 Wilfredo will begin work on "American Catracho," an evening-length piece which will debut in celebration of Cerqua Rivera Dance Theatre's 20th Anniversary in 2019.
