Event Description

Hedwig Dances presents Circling the Square, an evening of two works choreographed by Hedwig Dances' Artistic Director Jan Bartoszek.  The evening includes the world premiere of Trio M, a dance based on the numerical and metaphorical references of the number "three," and the reprise of ASCENDance, a multi-disciplinary dance theater production depicting renewal and transformation in a chaotic world.  For ASCENDance, Ms. Bartoszek collaborates with the creative team of sculptor Barbara
Cooper, video projection designer Petra Bachmaier of luftwerk, composer Matthew Ferraro, costume designer Vin Reed, and lighting designer Ken Bowen. Circling the Square will be performed TWO NIGHTS ONLY, Friday and Saturday, April 8-9, 2016 at 7:30 pm at the Athenaeum Theatre located at 2936 N. Southport Avenue in Chicago.  Tickets range in price from $15 to $35.  To reserve tickets, visit www.athenaeumtheatre.org, OR phone the Athenaeum Theatre Box Office at 773.935.6875, open Wednesday through Sunday, noon to curtain time.

Trio M is based on the geometry of the triangle and the numerical and metaphorical references to the number "three."  Utilizing a simple red bench as a prop, Trio M explores male energy as played out in the relationship of three men.  Trio M is the first installation of a diptych---a complimentary pair of dances---that illuminate each other. Company members Zachary Bird, Jesse Hoisington and Edson Cabrera perform Trio M

ASCENDance an interdisciplinary dance theater work, explores themes of renewal and transformation  The project began by developing the depth, complexity and movement capability of flat plans of paper using folding processes based on origami, an ancient Japanese ceremonial folding practice, to create large-scale structures.  The dancers manipulate the structural objects created by Barbara Cooper.  Immersive light projections by Petra Bachmaier change and expand the spatial orientation of the structural objects and give mood and character to the performance.  The music created by Matthew Ferraro, lighting by Ken Bowen, and costumes by Vin Reed complete the composition.  Wrapped in an exquisite frenzy of light and music, the dancers use the structures to embody movements of ritual and its antithesis, expressing the dichotomy between personal sanctuary
and the kaleidoscopic nature of the contemporary world.
