Cerqua Rivera Dance Theatre is a 17-year old home-grown company that fuses music, dance, and visual art to explore and celebrate contemporary American society. Its professional Dance and Music Ensembles collaborate with one another, with visual artists and designers, and with the people and places of Chicago. Since 1982, Pharez Whitted has performed throughout the United States and overseas, including gigs at the 1988 Presidential Inauguration, The Arsenio Hall Show, The Billboard Music Awards, Carnegie Hall, and the MoTown Music Showcase. Whitted studied music at DePauw University and went on to earn a master's degree from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. He is currently the director of jazz studies at Chicago State University and as of 2009 plays in Chicago, regionally, nationally and internationally, often with Bobby Broom, Ron Perrillo, and Eddie Bayard. Whitted is a United Musical Instruments (UMI) clinician and is the son of the late singer and bassist Virtue Hampton Whitted and the nephew of trombonist Slide Hampton. Pharez Whitted has performed with such jazz musicians as Wynton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, George Duke, Kirk Whalum,Elvin Jones, Slide Hampton, John Mellencamp, The Temptations, Roy Meriwether, The O'Jays, Lou Rawls, Ramsey Lewis, and former The Tonight Show bassist and classmate Bob Hurst. Whitted wrote, produced, arranged, and played on his two compact discs for MoTown's Jazz record label, entitled Pharez Whitted and Mysterious Cargo. He also co-produced the MoJazz albumPeople Make the World Go 'Round. Whitted's third album, Transient Journey was released in 2010 by Indianapolis jazz label Owl Studios. In January 2011, Pharez Whitted was nominated for The 10th Annual Independent Music Awards in the Jazz Album category for Transient Journey.
Marc Macaranas, from Delano, CA, graduated cum laude from the University of California, Irvine and relocated to Chicago, IL in 2005. Since then, he has performed at venues across North America and Europe with Lucky Plush Productions, The Seldoms, DanceWorks Chicago, Luna Negra Dance Theater, Cerqua Rivera Dance Theatre and RubberbanDance Group. Currently, he presents his own solo work as The Visitor(s). His choreography has been seen at Duets for My Valentine, The Open Space Project, Links Hall's THAW, Harvest Chicago Contemporary Dance Festival and Cerqua Rivera Dance Theatre.
