Event Description

Kelly Bowker and Dancers present Reframing Bodies with additional choreography by company dancers and guest artist Francisco Avina of Lucky Plush Productions. In an evening where athletic modern dance meets quirky dance theater we approach discussions about our bodies -both their potential and limitation from a variety of angles.

Reframing Bodies is a multimedia performance which includes layers of video, dance and sound presenting the topic of body image as a source of strength and power, focusing on the amazing potential our bodies contain and leaving behind the negativity we often see. Inspired by Bowkers conversations with Pilates clients over the years Reframing Bodies looks at the way our attitude towards our body image is influenced by the barrage of suggestions about what our bodies SHOULD be from the media.

Choreography by company dancers Jessica Madden, Mychelyn Schnettler, Christy Stallknecht and Destine Young will cover topics ranging from poetry and inspiration to explorations of our communication techniques and what happens when they break down.

Guest artist Francisco will be showing a preview of A.r.T. (Anti Retroviral Therapy), his first one man show. ART asks the questions brought up by an HIV positive diagnosis such as how to deal with the sense of shame, when to divulge the status to friends, lovers and family, questions of karma, how to maintain a positive life-outlook with a positive diagnosis. Follow his work through its development toward the evening length immersive multimedia premiere August 29th and 30th, September 5th and 6th at High Concept Laboratories.
