Expertly Crafted Contemporary Dance Weaves Ballet and Spoken Word on Stage

Chicago, IL – Internationally acclaimed choreographer Marlene Skog brings her sultry, elegant choreography to the stage with the unique and unusual pairing of contemporary ballet and spoken word in her evening-length concert Mosaic, premiering Friday, April 29 and Saturday, April 30, 2016 at Links Hall.

Set against a backdrop of original music and resonant poetry, Mosaic, which is Skog’s first concert in Chicago, weaves several short dance narratives, expressive solos and thrilling ensemble work together to evoke the very real and relevant human experiences of displacement—pain, solitude, chaos, pleasure, brilliance and madness.

"from start to finish, a fascinating evening of dance... striking" –Capital Times

On creating new work and resetting some work for this concert, Skog, a native New Yorker and currently an Assistant Professor of Dance at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, said, “It’s been invigorating. The dancers are truly invested in the work. Its immediacy and relevance makes it real for them, and I see them transformed. It’s brilliant.”

Among the works to be performed will be Skog’s ensemble “Midnight” featuring ten dancers in a surreal narrative of displacement and Diaspora, a triptych that highlights original spoken word across her award-winning solo “Passages,” the expressive duet “Exit/No Exit,” and “La Folia,” a new work for Chicago-based soloist, Petra Weith. “La Folia’s” brilliant choreography is set to Vivaldi’s work of the same name, and is sure to leave a lasting impression.
