Overview

"CDE is a stunning example of what a small storefront theater company’s mission should be". -Performink

Chicago Danztheatre Ensemble: "One voice, one story, one person at a time."

Founded in 2001, Chicago Danztheatre Ensemble is dedicated to “performance with a purpose.” CDE challenges, engages and inspires audiences onstage and in the classroom, through innovative storytelling in the genre of Tanztheatre, "which unites all art media to achieve an all-embracing, radical change in humankind." We collaboratively create thought-provoking performances and educational outreach programs incorporating theatre, music, movement, visual arts and literary text.

Our Performances combine dance, theatre and visual art to tell stories that address social issues. Our focus spans cultures and races, looking at social organization, civic participation, political climate, personal struggles, and everyday realities. We partner with multidisciplinary artists in Chicagoland and internationally.

Our Arts Education program reaches nearly 5,000 students annually in neighborhoods throughout Chicago. Approximately 95% of CDE’s dance, theatre and visual arts students are low-income, at-risk children and youth. CDE teaches social-emotional skills and boosts literacy. We also provide classical performance arts training in theater and dance.

Equity statement: CDE believes in equity. At Chicago Danztheatre Ensemble, we strive to create an equitable and empowering space for our artists, administrators, teachers, and audiences. We aim to build a platform for the voices of the diverse communities we serve. All are welcome.
