Innervation Dance Cooperative blurs boundaries between dance and theater in its upcoming original contemporary rock ballet Gods, Monsters, and Heroes. Based on the Greek myths and set to music by such popular artists as Pink, Feist, Coldplay, and Beck, this innovative and accessible new evening-length work will run October 6 through October 10 at Theater Wit, 1229 W. Belmont. From the comedic opening scene through to the hubris-shattering ending, the audience will feel the gamut of emotions, leaving the theater with a new understanding of the myths and of dance.
The first show-stopper of the evening promises to be the tap-dancing warriors (set to music by Feist) who mask the cries of baby Zeus from his father, who is out to eat him. After witnessing the birth and revitalization of the gods, we move on to a myth that tells of the origins of the seasons: Demeter and Persephone (set to music by Pink, Nicole Atkins, Annie Lennox, and Sweetbox) who dance with ballet-based modern technique to tell the tale of a daughter ripped from her mother for half a year for eternity. We then witness a dance contest between Apollo and Marsyas (set to Badly Drawn Boy, Jem, and Dead Can Dance), competing for the attention of the sumptuous Muses, before coming to understand the origins of the goddess Hera’s wrath. And this is just the beginning of a show filled with stories that have endured to today due to their universal truths, not to mention their emotional highs and lows and potential for raunchy situational comedy.
