Nomi Dance: "Three Parts of One"
NoMi Dance, Inc. (formally NoMi LaMad) opens its Sixth Season with one of our most ambitious self-produced concerts to date! A first time ever shared performance with Critically Acclaimed Chicago Choreographer Eddy Ocampo and accompanied by the breath-taking and brilliant light design of Jared Moore and Josh Weckesser!
“Three Parts of One” will mark NoMi’s first collaborative show as it takes this exciting joint venture to The Athenaeum Theatre on Saturday November 24th rounding out the 2012 Dance Chicago Festival. It will be a night filled with unique partnerships including an evening length work by Mr. Ocampo in collaboration with Josh Weckesser (co-founder of Bread and Roses Productions). The work will prove to be an extraordinary experience for both the dancers and the audience as they witness choreography affected by the lights, the music, and the unique atmosphere created by Mr. Weckesser and Mr. Ocampo.
Back by popular demand, renowned Dancer/Choreographer Paul Christiano sets his next creation on the company for the second time! Following his emotionally charged ensemble work, Athena’s Abacus, Mr. Christiano’s “Done and Done” promises not to disappoint once again with his signature style of pure athleticism and intricate partnering asking the age old question, “what truly sets you free?”.
Artistic Director Laura Kariotis teams up with music composer David S. Hamilton www.davidhamiltonmusic.com from Los Angeles, CA. David’s expertise has been working in the Film and Television Industry. This marks his first original composition for concert dance. Inspired by Mr. Hamilton’s impassioned work in Film and Television, Kariotis constructs scenes within her work that depict the unbalance in relationships as a result of the miscommunication within any given partnership.
Holding true to the tradition of letting our “inside voices out”, principal company member Sarah Robinson premieres her first contemporary pointe work on the NoMi dancers this November. Working off the themes introduced throughout the show, this premiere ensemble work connects the concepts becoming part of the “glue” that unites the collaboration between NoMi Dance, Inc. and Eddy Ocampo.
An added bonus to the program is a guest work by renowned teacher/choreographer Laura Wade (former Artistic Director of AKASHA dance co.) Ms. Wade is currently on faculty at Northwestern University, Lou Conte Dance Studio, Visceral Dance Center, teaches company class for River North Dance Company and is a frequent guest teacher for Hubbard Street Dance Chicago. Mr. Paul Christiano will dance Laura’s solo “Fazed” after being originally choreographed for the Northwestern performing arts program.
Awarded a Dance Chicago 2009 Outstanding Choreography Award, Laura Kariotis brings new works and reinvents herself to bring a fresh and innovative voice to NoMi each and every concert and season. Bringing audiences a fusion of contemporary, ballet, and ballroom, NoMi Dance, Inc. expands the scope of concert dance and strives to make it more accessible to all audiences. Eddy Ocampo has been awarded the Cliff Dwellers Choreographer of the Year Award in both 2005 and 2007. His work
