Event Description

Advanced Contemporary/Modern with Elysia C. Banks

Class will be fast-paced and energetic accompanied by an eclectic playlist. We will focus on weight shifts as they relate to floorwork and dancing and moving with intention and purpose. Timing and musicality will be explored during the class combination, while also leaving the dancer enough freedom to make their own defined artistic choices within the choreography. It’s important that each dancer dances for themselves and connects with the how and why they are doing what they do.

Elysia C. Banks graduated from Northern Illinois University in 2012 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance Performance. After graduating, Elysia danced with Winfred Haun and Dancers from 2012-2014 until she took a hiatus to devote herself to motherhood. She returned to teaching and choreographing in 2016 and in 2017 was named one of Deeply Rooted’s Emerging Choreographers. Elysia is also a 2018 Chicago Dancemakers Forum Greenhouse Artist, receiving a grant to fund her continued growth as a dancemaker. Using this grant, she founded Banks Performance Project in September 2018. BPP is a South side based, modern dance company in Arts Partnership at Hamilton Park Cultural Center in Englewood. Banks Performance Project strives to create works that are honest, sincere, and authentic to real life experience.

Take the class in-person with a mask in our Studio II (cap of 23 dancers).
