The full-length piece has been called “Spectacularly immersive” by the Chicago Tribune and “a journey that you want to experience over and over” by the New York Times. Cerqua Rivera Dance Theatre
ROOT: mwanzo wa mwili ni roho was created in 2018 by 3Arts award-winning choreographer Monique Haley and company co-founder and composer Joe Cerqua. Inspired by Monique’s own life and heritage, the work explores a modern African American experience through traditional African modes. In its early debut at the 2018 fall concert series, audiences were entranced by the athletic movement and the soulful soundtrack.

Joel Hall Dancers
The Joel Hall Dancers will perform Y2 Day, a performance based on the “communal chaos” of New Year’s Eve in 1999. Debuting in 2000 at the Chicago Cultural Center, the work was choreographed by Joel Hall, who envisioned representatives from the world’s nations in colorful and elaborate masks gathered around a table discussing the current state of affairs and how to change them for the better. The award-winning performance incorporates urban jazz, modern, ballet, hip hop and traditional African dance set to a dramatic mix of Japanese Kodo drums.

Rated ‘E’ Chicago Dance Crew
The Rated ‘E’ Chicago Dance Crew is a hip hop dance group from Columbia College Chicago. Founded in 2016, the group showcases what hip hop means to them through the positive movement of Dance. The dancers on the team come from diverse backgrounds and are skilled in many different styles of dance.
