Featuring the premiere of Steady Going, a new work by Kia Smith
Join us in our home theater at the Ruth Page Center for the Arts for the debut performance of the 2022-2023 Ruth Page Civic Ballet Training Company. Headlining the evening is “Steady Going,” a new contemporary ballet work by Kia Smith, the Executive Artistic Director of South Chicago Dance Theatre, a 2022 Chicago Dancemakers Forum Lab Artist awardee, and a highly sought-after freelance choreographer. The work explores themes of isolation, irony, and beauty. The collaborative rehearsal process encouraged the dancers to explore their own focus and intention within this framework.
The evening-length program will feature the Ruth Page Civic Ballet Training Company in additional classical and contemporary works, including Dreaming with Ruth Page: The Expanding Universe, Ruth Page Center’s 2021 commission by Nejla Yatkin which re-imagined Ruth Page’s iconic solo from 1932.
To round out the evening, the Training Company will be joined in performance by intermediate and advanced dancers of the Ruth Page School of Dance. Several pieces from the School repertoire were created and set during the 2022 International Dance Experience summer intensive program by our international guest artists.
Classical selections excerpted from Giselle were chosen and staged by Tania Suarez, former Ballet Mistress of Acosta Danza, Carlos Acosta’s dance company based in Havana, Cuba. The contemporary work with the advanced dancers was created by Dalit Haramaty, Head of the Dance Department at Aleph High School in Tel Aviv, Israel, during her first visit to Ruth Page Center.

Friday, October 14th - 7:00pm
*Please note that the Saturday, October 15th performance has been cancelled
The performance will be followed by a talkback with Kia Smith, focused on her process with the Training Company dancers. Stick around after the show!
