Event Description

Nature.  A deeply felt pull to relate to the world around us and its offering of solace, regeneration, and endless inspiration.  Finding Nature features dance, music, and storytelling as means to express out the relationship with the nature that surrounds us, as well as the recognition of our “human nature.”

Finding Nature, a collection of world-premiere experimental dance, music and storytelling performances, features the work of Corinne Imberski, Mark Kater, Wilson Tanner Smith, and Danielle Gilmore

Thursday, December 6 and Friday, December 7, 2018,  7:30 pm at the Hamlin Park Fieldhouse Theater

Admission is $8 in advance at findingnature.brownpapertickets.com, or $10 cash at the door.

Corinne Imberski will premiere Haven, her latest investigation into the intersection of abstraction and vulnerability.  Inspired by the kelp forests off the coast of Alaska, this solo work reflects upon the ideas of sanctuary and safety in relation to the need for exposure and openness. Imberski will also perform Into Second Self, a duet she created for herself and guest performer Daiva Bhandari.  It explores “the other” as a mirror, a shadow, a support, and an inner voice, and offers a glimpse into our natural tendency toward duality--through the use of spatial and emotional proximity and distance.  Mark Kater’s The Tree in Me, explores the joy and wonder for the “mighty oak” in a storytelling performance.  In collaboration with Julian Otis, Wilson Tanner Smith presents You just you and not someone else?, a music-theater performance piece addressing the idea that “one has been here before”:  that each and everyone shares a searching and finding within and without. In The Places I See, Danielle Gilmore explores what it means to find nature through a journey--inspired by rituals, symbols, and images familiar and unfamiliar in tradition.  Another duet, Gilmore’s Echo’s Within, performed by Melissa Pillarella and Emily Stepleton, is a discovery of recollections and reflections:  a meditation on experiencing the same thing at different times and recognizing them in each other.

This concert is supported by the Chicago Moving Company and produced through a three-month workshop with Ayako Kato at Hamlin Park.  It is part of U N T E T H E R E D, a 2-week performance/installation project on the eve of winter that includes 2 separate shows/weekends and multiple distinctive movement artists at the Hamlin Park Theater (all linked under the Chicago Moving Company umbrella).
