Horton-based Modern with Joshua L. Ishmon
Joshua L. Ishmon's class uses a foundation of Lester Horton technique with influences of West African movement dialects and Hip Hop culture to challenge dance artists to strengthen both their bodies and minds as well as deepen their sense of musicality and choreo-narrative.
Joshua L. Ishmon is native of Gary, IN. He is a 2007 graduate of Emerson School for the Visual and Performing Arts where he also studied with Ballet Chicago and M.A.D.D. Rhythms. After completing Deeply Rooted Dance Theater’s Summer Intensive (2006-2007), Ishmon joined the 2nd company, where he continued professional training and matriculated into the 1st company in 2009. He is the Director of Deeply Rooted’s Emerging Choreographer’s Showcase and serves as Rehearsal Director and Artistic Team member of DRDT. Ishmon has choreographed for a multitude of programs including Deeply Rooted, Ballet Chicago, and Cirqua Rivera and served as a co-choreographer and curator for the Chicago's Teen Dance Festival Showcase. In 2015, Ishmon started Production: COLORS with musical artist/composer, Sam Trump. This collaboration presented projects to sold out audiences for the Chicago Cultural Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art. In 2017, Ishmon was voted Chicago Best Choreographer by the Chicago Reader, listed as Breakout Contemporary Dance Artist by Newcity Chicago and became a Chicago Dancemakers Forum Lab Artist.

New this year - join us at the Ruth Page Center for the Arts for Open Company class with rotating guest artists, every Friday at 9am.
The class will feature rotating guest artists and combines with the Ruth Page Civic Ballet Training Company*. Method and technique will vary by teacher.

*The Ruth Page Civic Ballet Training Company is an elite group of pre-professional dancers, ages 17-25 who train daily, 9am-3:30pm, August – June at the Ruth Page School of Dance. The program provides continued comprehensive technique training, unique performance experiences, focused study with guest artists and choreographers, and travel to our International Sister Schools in Cuba, Italy and Spain.
