Lecture and Demonstration - Rajika Puri and the Ballet La Bayadere

Event Type
Talk/Discussion
Event Description
Choreographed by the great Marius Petipa in 1877, La Bayadere represents a European fascination with Indian temple dancers that dates back to Marco Polo, and reached its height in the mid-19th C with the visit of real devadasis. Join us for a special lecture/demonstration by Rajika Puri--acclaimed Bharatanatyam and Odissi dancer and scholar. Through video and photography, Ms. Puri--who was recently invited to consult on the Berlin reconstruction of La Bayadere due to her knowledge of Indian mime--will examine the portrayal of the Indian temple dancer in Western travel tales.
