In Light Hand performers appear and disappear, leading you on an adventure through knitted scenery and vignettes of dance. Each performer wears an individual speaker, creating shifting layers of music that beckon you from room to room. See contemporary dance and large-scale textiles up close as you explore, discovering dancers with handheld lights who reveal hidden layers and moments of magic.

Light Hand reframes the history of women's domestic arts as fully embodied  expressions of creativity and selfhood. Using a technique called "arm knitting" that engages the whole body in movement, the performers create, dance with, and dismantle large-scale textiles.

Follow the seven performers of Synapse Arts as they weave through the Gunder House at Berger Park, which is rarely open to the public. Witness the transformational impact of women building and changing an historic home together, illuminating freedom in the familiar.  Light Hand is an opportunity for all ages to see that dance can happen anywhere, and invites you to reimagine the possibilities of home, craft, and women’s work.

Berger Park Cultural Center is located at the intersection of Granville Avenue and Sheridan Road in Chicago, Illinois. Paid street parking is available, and the venue is readily accessible  from the Granville Red Line stop and bus routes 36, 147, and 151. The Gunder House is the North Mansion on the Berger Park grounds, which is separate from the community center that most patrons will be familiar with. The Gunder House includes all-gender restrooms and a coat rack. A full playground, cafe, and lakefront path are all directly outside the venue.

Light Hand is made possible by support from The Saints, The Illinois Arts Council Agency, The Chicago Park District, The City of Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, The MacArthur Fund for Arts and Culture at The Richard H. Driehaus Foundation, and High Concept Labs.
