Urban Bush Women

Hair & Other Stories

February 28–March 2, 2019 • 7:30 p.m.

“The Urban Bush Women are committed, triple-threat performers who dance, sing, and act with a sometimes searing sense of truthfulness.”

The New York Times

Chicago favorites Urban Bush Women return with a radical reimagining of a company classic. Hair & Other Stories is a multidisciplinary evening-length work that employs dance, music, and humor to address matters of self-image, race, gender identity, and economic inequities—all through the lens of hair, primarily that of African American women. Crafted from personal narratives drawn from the kitchens, salons, and social media platforms of diverse communities, and featuring new music compositions by The Illustrious Blacks (Manchildblack and Monstah Black), “this show refuses to make a trade-off between dancing and speaking—it does it all and more” (Oregon ArtsWatch).
