Costume Shop Supervisor—School of Theatre Arts (SoTA) at Illinois Wesleyan University
This full time, 9.5 month, benefits eligible position supports students in their growth of costume technology (design, construction, production) within the field of Theatre. Also supports faculty within the same field in development of attire for every production. The 9.5 months of this position is the academic year, running August to mid-May.
Responsibilities:
- Provides additional classroom instruction; advises and instructs students in costume construction, working across all degree tracks within SoTA, oversees instruction of THEA 112, THEA 210, THEA 317 when needed, attends planning and design meetings, advises student workers with regard to production.
- Manages all general daily costume shop operations and staffing; interviews and hires professional First Hand positions and assists in search of guest designers, trains all student workers, practices and trains in the use of safe handling of various chemicals, oversees maintenance, inventory and upkeep of of shop
- Manages assignment of costume shop and costume production budget line; manage all weekly costume production and shop reconciliations, manage planning and purchasing of all costume shop, production and classroom related supplies.
- Manage long and short term planning goals for costume area; determine educational equipment needs, attend prospective design technology student interviews and current students portfolio reviews
- Plan the costume design build process with guests and student designers for all SoTA productions; coordinate implementation of design, create original costumes, create original patterns
Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in related field required; has broad knowledge of costume construction, typically acquired through a relevant baccalaureate education program
Minimum of 5 years’ related experience
Understands the collaborative theatrical process of design and production
Has strong communication/interaction skills with sensitivity to working with students
Is knowledgeable of textiles and operation of all costume shop equipment
