Overview

Celebrating its 46th year, the Chicago Moving Company is one of Chicago's most celebrated contemporary dance organizations, "bold, commanding . . . the energy is awesome" (The New York Times).

Noted for its artistic innovation and powerful performance style, CMC is recipient of 4 Choreographic Fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Chicago Dance Coalition's Lifetime Award, and a New Stages for Dance Award, among other honors,  The company has performed throughout Chicago; toured nationally, internationally (Berlin. Germany;  Salvador, Brazil; Ulan Bator, Mongolia, Tokyo and Tottori, Japan); and collaborated with world-class organizations including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Oriental Institute, University of Chicago.  In 2007 the company entered into an ongoing cultural exchange with the Arts Council and dance artists of Mongolia, including CMC's 2010  tour to Ulan Bator and the hosting of Mongolian dancer/choreographer Odbayar Batsuuri as an international artist-in-residence with the company in 2013.  In 2013 the company celebrated its jaw-dropping 40th Anniversary Season with a year-long series of special events, culminating in a sold-out 40th Anniversary Concert at Chicago's prestigious Dance Center of Columbia College.  In 2015-17, CMC undertook an artistic and cultural exchange project with award-winning, experimental Japanese choreographer Saiko Kino.  Funded by a prestigious MacArthur Foundation International Connections Fund award, the project included CMC tour to Tokyo and Tottori, Japan; commission of a dance work "M O B I U S" by Kino; original score for the work by 3 Japanese musicians (Yasumune Morshige, Kumiko Yabu, Yuta Yokoyama) and restaging/performance of the work in Chicago.

Originally founded as a repertory company, CMC then developed into a single-artist led company (largely presenting the work of founder/Chicago dance-icon Nana Shineflug), and has now evolved into a complex, 21st-century dance organization, presenting and housing the work of multi-artists (within and beyond the company), operating a Chicago dance space (the Hamlin Park Theater), offering programming that develops and shelters contemporary dance/dancers, and being a global partner with other contemporary dance artists.

CMC is also recognized nationally as a leader and standard-setter in services for artists, community arts. Since 1995 CMC has been Arts-Partner-in-Residence at the Hamlin Park Theater (HPT) in Chicago's vibrant Roscoe Village neighborhood--and continues to develop the space as a dance center for the community. At the HPT, CMC produces its own aristic work, presents dance festivals/performances featuring numerous Chicago artists, harbors 2 talented choreographers (Rachel Bunting,Ayako Kato) as artists in residence, hosts workshops with visiting artists of international reknown, holds ongoing movement classes for ages 18 mos. - seniors,  operates the Performance Project for Chicago dance artists self-producing their own work, and programs the Hamliin Park Pop-Up Gallery, a visual art/installation art space in the HPT lobby with a focus on works by movement artists.  For more info on the Hamlin Park Theater and its programs, please visit its venue page on this site.
