Trisha Brown Dance Company (TBDC) with Merce Cunningham Trust (MCT) celebrate the choreographers’ legendary collaborations with the visionary American artist Robert Rauschenberg. Named Critic’s Pick by The New York Times, the program unites the work of these iconic 20th-century artists in an evening of dance featuring original presentations designed by Rauschenberg.

Dancing with Bob includes Brown’s beloved Set and Reset (1983), with a driving score by Laurie Anderson. Rauschenberg’s designs for the translucent set and costumes further illuminate the work’s exploration of visibility and invisibility. This masterpiece exemplifies the juxtaposition of seductively fluid movement with unpredictable geometric style — a hallmark of Brown’s choreography.

The performance also features Cunningham’s Travelogue (1977), a vaudevillian pièce de résistance, which, prior to this program, hadn’t been performed by a professional company since 1979. The dancers engage in a series of antic encounters and deadpan entanglements. The episodic work is performed with John Cage’s Telephones and Birds, comprising recordings of bird songs and telephone calls made to numbers with recorded messages.

While widely recognized for his groundbreaking contributions to visual art, Rauschenberg played a significant role in the performing arts — both as a performer and as a designer for choreographers over several decades. Among the many dance artists with whom he collaborated, his most frequent and notable partnerships were with Merce Cunningham and Trisha Brown. This performance stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of their boundless creative collaborations.
