Performance
Season 38 at Hubbard Street continues with the premiere U.S. production of Solo Echo by Crystal Pite, inspired by “Lines for Winter” by poet Mark Strand, and set to sonatas for cello and piano by Johannes Brahms. For seven dancers and originally created for Nederlands Dans Theater, Solo Echo explores the “idea that we’re all one and we’re all many,” says Ballet BC artistic director Emily Molnar. “It exemplifies so much that is signature Crystal Pite.” Hubbard Street 2 joins the Winter Series to premiere A Glimpse Inside a Shared Story, with fast-paced, athletic choreography by Chinese-American artist Yin Yue. Dancer-choreographer Penny Saunders also unveils a world premiere, Out of Keeping, with décor by two-time Bessie Award–winning designer Michael Mazzola, and a score featuring Icelandic artist Ólafur Arnalds, and a collaboration between pianist Volker Bertelmann and Grammy Award–winning violinist Hilary Hahn. Called “breathtaking” by the Chicago Tribune, Waxing Moon by Princess Grace Award–winner Robyn Mineko Williams completes the Winter Series. “Williams, who danced with Hubbard Street for 12 years, has grown into a choreographer of great sophistication and power,” says the Chicago Sun-Times, while Gapers Block notes, “this is the type of dancing viewers get lost in.” Click here to watch video from rehearsals for Solo Echo.
