DanceBuilders is a giving circle of dedicated dance lovers who make an annual donation to the SCD general operating fund in recognition of our work. (Our general operations include membership services, public programming, dancer professional development, our comprehensive website, and much more.) In 2023, when we re-ignited DanceBuilders after the pandemic, 38 DanceBuilders supported SCD's critical role in a healthy dance ecosystem in Chicago.
- DanceBuilders value the strength of our dynamic and diverse dance sector and celebrate Chicago’s role as an international dance capital.
- DanceBuilders’ donations support SCD’s operating fund that buoys ongoing programs such as Chicago Dance Month, Screendance Club, and our quarterly Community Convenings; manifests our commitment to racial equity; and helps to sustain our small but mighty staff.
- By joining this special giving circle, DanceBuilders help See Chicago Dance empower artists, build community, promote equity, grow audiences, and advocate for the field.
Now, more than ever, we need you. In 2020, during the pandemic, we elected to waive membership fees. These fees had been the basis of our non-profit business model since this organization’s inception. We made explicit our commitment to equity in our services, practices, and administration and realized that, as the pandemic faded, we could not go back to requiring members to pay for what SCD is mission-bound to provide. We did not want there to be any financial obstacle to accessing our programs and services.
We are very proud that SCD membership has grown over 400% in the last four years and demand for our programs and services and on our website has never been greater. Along with our organizational supporters, called the Membership Circle, DanceBuilders support the revenue “lost” from the permanent elimination of membership dues.
