It's that time of year! Break out the hats, mittens and scarves and don that extra heavy winter coat. Flurries are in the air ushering in the holiday season. It's not only time for The Nutcracker -- and we have a slew of them this month -- but a variety of great performances and Hot Deals for this Black Friday. Leading the Nutcracker charge, with 23 performances at the Auditorium Theatre this month, is The Joffrey Ballet*. Other Chicago-area companies dancing their take on the holiday classic are Salt Creek Ballet, DanceWest Ballet, the Ruth Page Civic Ballet and the Hyde Park School of Dance ends its 20th anniversary season with this ballet favorite.
The Moscow Ballet's Great Russian Nutcracker returns to the Akoo Theatre in Rosemont again this year, while the Joel Hall Dancers present a sassy, cross-genre version with their Nuts and Bolts -- A Jazzy Holiday Treat at the Ruth Page Center for the Performing Arts. Other non-Nutcracker, holiday-themed performances include Chicago Tap Theatre's Tidings of Tap, Alliance Dance Company's Winter Dance Bash! and Pheonix Rising Chicago's A Swingin'Christmas.
Muntu Dance Theatre takes the stage with Memories N' Time featuring original compositions by composer/pianist Reginald R. Robinson and Hubbard Street Dance Chicago revisits Alejandro Cerrudo's evening-length work inspired by Chagall's America Windows, One Thousand Pieces. Chicago Dance Crash features choreography by Lizzie MacKenzie in ...and sometimes we were lost, but always we became found. Continuing shows include The Nexus Project's stellar two-man show and Khecari's cresset: vibrant, rusting.
At Link's Hall Iowa-based company Co'Motion DanceTheater presents East Meets West, while Rachel Damon and Dan Mohr present Collision Theory, "improvised performances by curated pairings of musicians and dancers".
