Shyamali: Sprouted Words

February 14–16, 2019 • 7:30 p.m.

“A soaring tribute to the global community of women who challenge oppression, often at great risk to their bodies and souls...”

Star Tribune (Minnesota)

Ananya Dance Theatre’s work is inspired by the extraordinary dreams of ordinary women. This company of self-described cultural activists makes its Dance Center debut with a work exploring how dissent against oppression fuels life force. Shyamali(“dark green”) draws a metaphor between the resilience of grass, which springs up when trod upon, and the courage of women who sustain their communities against injustice and refuse to be broken. Poetic, defiant, and transformational, Shyamali: Sprouted Words is a “spellbinding work of strength, agility, concentration, and exotic beauty” (The Maui News).
