Event Description

The Newberry Library presents a new exhibition this fall, Chicago Avant-Garde: Five Women Ahead of Their Time, which features Ruth Page as one of five famous Chicago women who took radical risks in their lives and in their art as avant-garde leaders. The exhibition places specific focus on Page’s development of her 1932 “Expanding Universe” solo, and includes supplemental lectures, guided tours and more.

Please note: A face mask is required, regardless of vaccination status. No appointments or advance tickets required. The exhibit is open Tuesday - Saturday 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. daily. Newberry exhibitions are free and open to all.

In addition, inspired by the exhibit, The Ruth Page Center for the Arts is celebrating its 50th Anniversary season with the Fall 2021 Showcase: The “Expanding Universe” Project featuring two events. A re-imagining by Chicago-based dancemaker Nejla Yatkin for the Ruth Page Civic Ballet Training Company of Ruth Page’s iconic 1932 solo "Expanding Universe" in collaboration with artist Isamu Noguchi, which premieres at the Ruth Page Center for the Arts, 1016 N Dearborn St., Saturday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 17 at 3 p.m. And "BEHIND THE CURTAIN: The 'Expanding Universe' Project," a behind-the-scenes presentation that offers audiences a glimpse into Yatkin’s’s creative process on Tuesday, Oct. 12 at 3 p.m. at Northeastern Illinois University's Steinberg Fine Arts Center, 3701 West Bryn Mawr. The lecture/demonstration will also feature a sneak preview of the new work being developed, performed live by the Ruth Page Civic Ballet Training Company, and archival footage of Ruth Page's choreography "Variations on Euclid" from 1933.
