Created and curated by Project Bound, DANCE ON THE DECK is a one night only mini festival on Friday, October 1st on the patio at Hexe Coffee in Avondale. This event is a free, outdoor community event bringing together dance peers to share work in a communal space.
The evening will feature two premiere works by Project Bound Dance including “Sunset’s That Way” by company member Alix Schillaci and “What’s Left Over” by Artistic Directors Ashley Deran and Emily Loar. The performance will also feature works by Chicago Dance Crash, Re|Dance, Britney Johnson, and The Colony training program at The Hive in Ravenswood.
“Sunset’s That Way” is a dance work exploring the performance of identity told through a disrupted narrative. Taking place in a parallel universe where the cinematic qualities of life are amplified, each dancer attempts to manage an endless task while trying to maintain control of their role. Sunset’s That Way is getting glitter stuck in your eye, tripping on the runway, crying in the rain, glamorous pajamas, a Hollywood movie set, where our lead rides off in the wrong direction.
“What’s Left Over” commemorates Project Bound’s long awaited return to the studio after the worst of the pandemic. Indulging in the ability to move in a space other than a kitchen or living room, the piece celebrates big shapes and vigorous dancing. Almost hypnotic to the eye, the dancers find release through endless circling and spiraling movement that is unburdened by extensive subtext. It is set to a score that evokes a sense of reflection on the recent past and a tentative hopefulness for what is to come.
