Event Description
Modern class at the Chicago Cultural Center with Stephanie Nugent will be hosted by Simantikos Dance Chicago as a part of See Chicago Dance's Chicago Dance Month!
Class will be from 2:45 to 4:00 and will be followed by an informal showing/preview of Nugent's new work set on Simantikos Dance Chicago and a work choreographed and performed by Nugent and her daughter, Savannah.

Artistic Director of Nugent Dance, presenting her choreography, improvisation scores, and inter-disciplinary collaborations throughout the US and in Italy since 2001, Stephanie has also performed internationally with Ririe Woodbury Dance Company, Keith Johnson/Dancers, Malashock Dance and Company, Victoria Marks, Eun Jung Choi, Selene Carter, and Della Davidson, and has collaborated with artists including Miguel Azcue, Eve Beglarian, Kim Epifano, Stefan Fabry, Carmela Hermann, Suzanne Lappas, Lower Left, Kristen Smiarowski, and Shel Wagner Rasch since 1991.
During her 18-year residency in southern California, Stephanie served on full-time faculty at California Institute of the Arts (2008-2013), as an Associate Professor of Dance at UC-Santa Barbara (2001-2007), co-founded and hosted the Los Angeles Eastside Contact Improvisation Lab Jam, taught at CI festivals including WCCIJ, SOMA Fest, and LA ID Fest, and facilitated HOURGLASS events with partner/composer Robin Cox.
Since re-locating to Indiana, Nugent has created commissions for the Ririe Woodbury Dance Company and Indiana University Bloomington, participated as a resident artist in Indy Convergence 2013, built a dance studio, and re-established Nugent Dance with performances of Mapping the Aether, presented by the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Directed by Nugent in collaboration with fellow choreographer/performer Suzanne Lappas, Mapping the Aether earned Nugent Dance notice as a "re-located company to watch" -Lou Harry, Indianapolis Business Journal.
Recent performances also include Katherinette by Selene Carter, improvisations with Motus Dance Theater / Big Robot at TEDX Indy, and fellow artists at Art in Odd Places Indy, Remembering the Reds While Traveling This Sensitive Pink Earth by Keith Johnson, and Slippery, Nugent's own improvised work on motherhood, presented at Mazopalooza, and The Breaking Ground Dance and Film Festival.
Upcoming teaching engagements include serving as Artistic Director for the 2016 Great Lakes Area Contact Improvisation Enthusiasts Retreat (G.L.A.C.I.E.R) and leading the mid-day contact improvisation intensive at the 2016 Seattle Festival of Improvisational Dance (S.F.D.I.), with long-time contact partner Shel Wagner Rasch. In 2014 Nugent served as visiting faculty at The Ohio State University and is currently on faculty in the Department of Drama, Theatre, and Contemporary Dance at IU Bloomington, teaching contemporary dance technique, contact improvisation, and dance studies.
