MOMENTA’s Spring Evening Concerts, Images of Women, showcase a variety of female images, past and present. Our classical ballets are primarily in the Romantic Style, beginning with Pas de Quatre -- a portrait of the four greatest ballerinas of the Romantic Era; then Bournonville's fast, intricate choreography in both Flower Festival and a divertissement from Paul et Virginie; and a section from Paquita, by Petipa, which shows the progression of women from delicate dancers who seemed to float, to the assertive women who reigned supreme on their toes in the great classical ballets. In the second section of our concerts, we see the image morph into women of power in works by three of the greatest women of American Modern Dance. There will be two different “dances of the Furies” – one by Isadora Duncan and one inspired by Martha Graham, followed by Doris Humphrey's solo The Call/Breath of Fire. The concert also features a collaboration with The Pro Musica Youth Chorus; a premiere by Mei-Kuang Chen, for Sarah Cullen Fuller and JP Tenuta; and we will close our concerts this season with sections of Larry Ippel’s 1986 Community Suite – this will be Larry’s farewell performance with MOMENTA as he plans to retire later this year.
