In 1993, Joel Hall Dancers & Center lost their beloved studio to a tragic fire. As they gathered themselves to move forwards together, their roots grew deeper, and the unfurling of their new wings was chronicled in The Phoenix Rising (1994). Today, as challenges test and bolster their collective strength, their roots grow stronger again while they stretch into the stratosphere.
LEGACY: Phoenix^5 is a collection of works driven by, for, and about JHD’s many communities, representative of the collective grace and grit it takes to push through obstacles. This celebration of Cofounder and Artistic Director Emeritus Joel Hall’s LEGACY stretches far beyond him as his world-renowned choreography is joined by that of Jacqueline Sinclair (Artistic Director), William Gill (Assistant Artistic Director), Van Collins (Guest Choreographer/ JHDYC Director), and Merrick Mitchell (Guest Choreographer/ JHDC Instructor).
Join the movement of energetic transformation as the Joel Hall Dancers honor the past, present, and future of Chicago Jazz Dance in its unstoppable Black and queer ingenuity.
