Hedwig Dances, known for its theatricality and originality, presents LIGHTPLAY, featuring Raum, a new work by Jan Bartoszek, and the reprise of Rigoberto Saura’s The Flowering Mechanisims. Both pieces play with illusion and perspective, combining poetic choreography with projections and set objects.
Jan Bartoszek's Raum explores transparencies and the shifting perceptions arising from cascading layers of movement and fluctuating light forms. Raum continues Ms. Bartoszek's exploration of the Bauhaus and is inspired by the work of László Moholy-Nagy. In collaboration with theater artists Sharon Evans, Bartoszek delves deeper into Bauhaus history, abstraction and visual metaphor.
Company member Rigoberto Saura examines human interactions and routine mechanical behaviors. Through individual's emotional and somatic responses, the dance illuminates how interpersonal relations evolve in chaotic environments. The Flowering Mechanisims is performed to a symphonic score, with set and costume design by Saura.
Celebrating 35 years of inspiration, LIGHTPLAY is presented one weekend only: Friday, March 13 and Saturday, March 14 at 7:30pm, and Sunday, March 15 at 3 pm at the Ruth Page Center for the Arts, 1016 North Dearborn Street, Chicago, Illinois. Special Post-show conversation with the choreographers will be held on Opening Night.
