"...scintillating abstract dance...insanely complex and changeful rhythms...shifting back and forth between deep, soulful truths and American vernacular...” -- Chicago Tribune

Rooted in the South Indian dance-theatre technique of Bharatanatyam, Natya Dance Theatre returns to The Dance Center to celebrate 40 years with the world premiere of Varna – Colors of White.Conceived by Founder and Artistic Director Hema Rajagopalan, the full-evening work explores universal emotions that find expression through words, music, dance and drama. The narratives bring together the secular and the divine, the manifest and the hidden as part of an integrated whole. Eminent musicians from India accompany principal dancer Krithika Rajagopalan and Natya’s dancers. Based on ancient texts and poems of Sage poets and set to original musical scores, Varna – Colors of White brings to life feelings of love, desire, compassion, sorrow, greed, jealousy and humor.
