Secret Experiments in Ballet #4: Phantom Dance

Event Description

Emily Stein continues to play in the intersection of improvisation and the ballet vocabulary. Her newest choreography explores familiar elements of classical ballet through a lens of experimentation, improvisation and feminism, with a focus on the experience of the individual dancer.  Secret Experiments in Ballet #4: Phantom Dance was inspired by the imagery of supernatural women in classical ballet, particularly the romantic era’s Giselle. The dance features a contemporary corps de ballet, exploring and subverting the qualities of the tradition – ethereality, unison, conformity. Solos, duets and small groups expose the hidden movement voices of individual dancers. Chicago jazz composer and arranger Scott Williams performs the score live, using Adolph Adam’s original music from Giselle as a jumping off point.

Danced by Katie Campana, Jess Duffy, Molly Hillson, Katie McCann, Chloe Michels, Jordan Reinwald and Emily Stein
