Event Description

This two-hour workshop begins with an 80-minute class in contemporary ballet technique, informed by the current, field-leading syllabus developed by Jodie Gates for the University of Southern California’s Glorya Kaufman School of Dance. Attendees will then explore the choreography of William Forsythe through a 40-minute session based in phrasework from Enemy in the Figure, Forsythe’s seminal ballet combining set material and structured improvisations, and one of three acts comprising his landmark evening-length work Limb’s Theorem (1990). Hubbard Street’s first acquisition of Forsythe’s choreography, Enemy in the Figure entered the company’s repertoire in 2005. Premiere U.S. productions of Quintett and N.N.N.N. followed in 2012 and 2015, respectively, and the company also performs Forsythe’s One Flat Thing, reproduced.
