Ugly Flavors // Work-in-Progress Showing with Jumaane Taylor

Event Type
Performance
Event Description

A tap dance working with a combination of legendary composed recordings built for challenging the ear. Ornette Coleman’s ‘The Shape of Jazz to Come’ and Igor Stravinsky’s ‘Rite of Spring’ present an everlasting display of sound progression and Taylor will deliver a tap interpretation, inspired by the original 1913 Vaslav Nijinsky choreography that perfectly complimented Stravinsky’s score. While also moved by the revolutionary Pina Bausch version of the 70s, the hoofing will rhythmically add a missing layer. These works will be resurrected with tap dance terminology and narrating percussive movement.

Jumaane’s residency has been supported by a partnership between Chicago Dancemakers Forum, the Dance Center of Columbia College Chicago and Performance Response Journal.
