Thodos Dance Chicago presents “A Light in the Dark” & Two Chicago Premieres including a Thodos/Studio Gang Architects Collaboration
Thodos Dance Chicago returns to the Harris Theater for Music and Dance for two performances only! This acclaimed contemporary company with a distinct American choreographic voice and vibrant, award-winning style presents an exhilarating evening of dance. Leading artists from Chicago’s culture scene, TDC Founder and Artistic Director Melissa Thodos and renowned Chicago architect Jeanne Gang from Studio Gang Architects, have combined their singular talents to create a cross-disciplinary, world premiere dance that explores the fascinating worlds of—and intersections among—dance, architecture and physics. This exciting new work, as yet untitled, will debut as part of TDC’s WINTER CONCERT 2014.
The program also boasts the return of TDC’s acclaimed story ballet A LIGHT IN THE DARK, the story of Helen Keller and Anne Sullivan, co-choreographed by Melissa Thodos and Broadway legend Ann Reinking, with an original score by Bruce Wolosoff, named one of the TOP TEN DANCES for 2013 by the Chicago Sun-Times. The Chicago Tribunehailed it as “a visceral illustration of the power of dance to enlighten.”
Also featured in the program is TSURU, a World Premiere by Hubbard Street Chicago’s Lucas Crandall; and PANEM NOSTRUM QUODITIANUM (Latin for “our daily bread”) by Ahmad Simmons of River North Dance Chicago—a spiritual, lyrical piece which premiered at TDC’s New Dances 2013. The Chicago Tribune called it “robust in technique and thought-provoking in theme, a sincere, straightforward exploration of spiritual matters in dance.”
