Khecari artistic directors Julia Rae Antonick and Jonathan Meyer are looking for dancers with an interest in our work. These auditions will be structured as free workshops; we will not be making cuts.
The first workshop will be held for emerging dancers and the second for established dancers.
We feel there is a prejudice towards youth in the dance world, and in the past have addressed this by ignoring age in our auditions. In this case we are interested in your choosing in which category (or both) you feel you belong, or even being in conversation with us about the nature of these categorizations. If you feel like you identify with bothcategories, you are welcome to attend both workshops.
We’re looking to meet and work with a broadened group of dancers – those we know already and those we don’t – to extend our sense of the capabilities and interests of dancers currently in the field. While we are seeking dancers for future projects, we do not anticipate making any decisions immediately following this audition. Any dancers eventually hired for projects would be paid; we offer $10/hour. If you have been to a previous audition or you know we are familiar with your work, we encourage you to come to express interest in working with Khecari. Dancers are also welcome to come to the audition simply as a free workshop.
We have a somatically grounded approach to dance, a strong interest in improvisation, and a penchant for highly kinetic movement and intricate partnering work. Because of the nature of our work, we want to work with dancers who love to roll up their sleeves – whether that means working hard as a dancer in the studio or being game to mop the floor of a dusty old warehouse as part of rehearsal duties. We may ask a wide range from you, from the pedestrian, the simple, things that may feel boring as a technician but are integral to the work, to execution of dance material that is explosive, athletic, technically challenging. We are excited to work with artists who are interested in the audience’s larger experience, not just the dance phrases. Our ideal collaborators are enthusiastic, selfless, self-aware, and self caring, good communicators and supportive of fellow collaborators.

Although it is not required, we strongly encourage you to attend our Open Rehearsal on April 1st to see what we are currently working on and come meet us before the audition.
