A delightful gem of a ballet in the commedia dell’ arte style, Harlequinade tells the story of love, loss and redemption through the antics of a colorful cast of characters. Enjoy the fun as Columbine’s father repeatedly attempts to deflect Harlequin’s attentions and marry off his daughter to a rich, old suitor. The program also includes a World Premiere, Beatbox, by Eddy Ocampo and an excerpt from the stupendous ballet, La Bayadère. Salt Creek Ballet brings “Harlequinade: An Italian Fairy Tale” to the McAninch Arts Center Saturday, May 14th at 3:00 p.m. and Sunday, May 15th at 1:00 p.m.
Performing the title role in “Harlequinade: An Italian Fairy Tale” will be guest artist Yoshihisa Arai of the Joffrey Ballet. Mr. Arai is an internationally acclaimed dancer who also performs in Japan as a guest dancer and teaches at Japanese ballet schools as a guest teacher. On Sunday, May 15th children of all ages will have a special opportunity to join the cast of Harlequinade onstage for an exciting post-show program. Children will have an opportunity to meet costumed characters and learn some dance steps onstage, followed by a cookies and punch reception. The Italian Ballet Class will take place directly after Sunday’s matinee. An additional fee of $5/child is required to attend the class.
