Three dance visionaries show us the shape of dance to come in new works specially made for Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, which makes its eagerly awaited return to the MCA’s Edlis Neeson Theater. Three North American treasures in contemporary dance, all recipients of the prestigious Princess Grace Award, share their bright, distinctive styles, which are shaping the dance of today and tomorrow.
Building on his explorations of baroque, classical, and urban music, Brooklyn-based choreographer Kyle Abraham continues his recent work in opera music, collaborating with eminent composer and musician Nico Muhly for this performance by Hubbard Street. Montreal’s Victor Quijada, founder and artistic director of RUBBERBANDance Group, weaves classical ballet and street dance. For this work, he invites Jasper “DJ Lil Jaz” Gahunia to arrange a fluid score performed by 11 dancers who evoke flocking birds. Hubbard Street alum and Chicago native Robyn Mineko Williams, who infuses a highly stylized form into individual expression, combines dancers in different configurations to set off unpredictable chemistries.
