Artists & Filmmakers Ashwaty Chennat and Abhijeet, with Mandala South Asian Performing Arts
Conversation Moderated by See Chicago Dance Staff
Mandala South Asian Performing Arts is a Chicago-based arts and culture organization. Mandala uplifts the artists and communities of the dynamic South Asian diaspora by offering performances, classes and cultural engagements led by passionate artists. Artistic Director, Ashwaty Chennat, is a first-generation artist who finds her footing in generational continuity and cultural progression. Moods of Nāyikā is an episodic experimental performance film that explores traditional Indian frameworks of the heroine or "Nāyikā" through a queer lens. In eight mood pieces, where "Nāyikā" is often constricted to a heroine's relationship to a lover, She is reimagined with explosive color, Bharatanatyam dance and drag performance. Through post production techniques, Nāyikā is contemporized, distorted, amplified and given a renewed agency over herself. Who is She?
Join See Chicago Dance's latest program, Screendance Club: a radically casual watch-party and discussion of short dance films. Different from a typical talk-back, Screendance Club aims to create an environment of open conversation and exploration--with artists, filmmakers, and viewers on an equal footing. SCD writers curate and facilitate conversations on viewing and interpreting dance on screen.
