Individual and intersectional communities alike come together for Juneteenth and Pride to celebrate progress and connect over visions for the future. In this action of honoring our collective legacy, the Joel Hall Dancers are excited to partner with fellow Chicago Black Dance Legacy Project company Muntu Dance Theatre* to present “We are the Change!”
"We are the Change!" is a Juneteenth celebration of the Joel Hall Dancers’ rich Black and LGBTQIA+ history, highlighting the unique voice of Joel Hall, a choreographer who has been shaping the artistic landscape in Chicago long before structures of power wanted to acknowledge or properly credit his voice and perspective.
Joel Hall’s choreographic voice is echoed by those of Jacqueline Sinclair (Artistic Director) and William Gill (Associate Artistic Director), descendants of Joel Hall’s dance lineage who carry the mission and vision of the Joel Hall Dancers & Center forwards. Muntu Dance Theatre will be presenting works highlighting contemporary and ancient African and African-American dance, music, and folklore. Both companies invite you to come together, practice joy as resistance, honor collective history and ancestors, and look forwards together.
*Muntu Dance Theatre will be joining the Joel Hall Dancers for the show on June 19 at 3pm
