Master of the “tama” or traditional talking drum, Modou performs a danceable mix of traditional West African rhythms, R&B, soul, jazz, and reggae.
Modou "Tama" Sarr Mbengue is originally from Senegal, West Africa. Growing up in a large griot family of traditional musicians and storytellers, he got his start playing drums and singing at the age of five. He is known as a master of the “tama” or traditional talking drum, which has allowed him to travel and perform throughout West Africa and North America. With his band, he merges traditional West African rhythms with R&B, soul, jazz, and reggae for an experience that is both unique and danceable!
