Movement Mashup with Francisco Aviña
Location: Ruth Page Center for the Arts, 1016 North Dearborn St.
11:00 am - 12:30 pm
In this class, you will learn and explore different movement genres such as Hip-hop, Salsa, Reggaeton, and contemporary dance (among others) and take factions of each to create a final movement phrase that is dynamic and rich with texture and blurs the lines of different dance forms.
Francisco Aviña is a performing artist and choreographer whose training and career spans over three decades. He is the recipient of the Best Male Interpreter of Contemporary Dance in Mexico for the last two years. Francisco's trajectory has been broad in its scope and reach, making its way to the big screen, stage, television, and concert dance at the highest levels. Francisco’s immersive training started at Orange County High School of The Performing Arts in California followed by the acclaimed Alvin Ailey School in New York City. He then moved on to Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, where he was a company member for three seasons. He was fortunate enough to interpret works by icons such as Ohad Naharin, Jiri Kylian, Trey McIntyre, Daniel Ezralow, Nacho Duato and Twayla Tharp to name a few.
Spotlighting a few poignant moments of Francisco’s expansive career, he has been fortunate enough to create or share the stage with artists such as Celine Dion in her concert residency, A New Day… in Las Vegas for six years. He choreographed and managed 350 artists for Mexico’s 200th-year anniversary Bicentennial celebration at the foot of the national palace in the historic center El Zocalo, which was viewed live by more than 1.5 million people. Francisco was the director of choreography and main choreographer for the record-breaking show The Masked Singer, Mexico. Francisco also had the privilege to choreograph the motion picture Glitter and Doom, a musical featuring reimagined music of the Grammy award-winning duo the Indigo Girls. Most recently, he choreographed the yet-to-be-released Disney series, Washington Black, soon to be released on Hulu. Along with a Myriad of other television and live concert events, Francisco loves to blur the lines between commercial and contemporary dance works. Drawing from his diverse background, he tries to create works that are thought-provoking yet tangible.
