A HOLIDAY STORY INSPIRED BY THE CLASSIC BALLET - DECEMBER, 2015
More than likely, you've seen a performance of the ballet The Nutcracker at least once in your life. The now classic ballet is performed by ballet companies of all sizes, student and professional alike, across the U.S. and the world each December. The Nutcracker, set to an enchanting score by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, was originally created by two of classic ballet's foremost choreographers, Maruis Petipa and Lev Ivanov, in 1982 in St. Petersburg, Russia. The ballet later gained widespread popularity in the U.S. after another historic choreographer, George Balanchine, premiered a version using his own choreography on the New York City Ballet in 1954. For many of us, The Nutcracker seems like as much a necessary part of the Christmas season as are favorite Christmas carols or setting up a Christmas tree.
This December, the students from Ballet 5:8 School of the Arts' pre-professional ballet training programs will come together to perform our own take on the holiday classic. Created especially for the school by Ballet 5:8 Artistic Director Julianna Slager, Beyond the Nutcracker will include the best elements of the traditional ballet, including tutus and pointe shoes, Tchaikovsky's sensational score, and a magical journey to faraway lands. Nonetheless, Beyond the Nutcracker will take audiences on a journey in a faraway land not full of sugarplums and candy canes, but in a place where something that we often take for granted never happened: What would Christmas be like if Jesus never came? Join us for a magical Christmas dream where we will explore the true meaning of Christmas and the amazing gift of Love that is Jesus Christ.
