Ballet 5:8's first performance at Judson University will feature a sampling of some of the highlights of Ballet 5:8's Fall Season repertoire. The program’s first work, And Mercy, is a world premiere by New York choreographer and Chicago native Preston Miller. The work explores concepts of judgment, grace and mercy in an athletic, contemporary style that engages the eye in continuous, connected movement emerging seamlessly from the music.
The second work is choreographed by Ballet 5:8 Artistic Director Julianna Slager. Originally premiered in 2013, As We Pray was inspired by the Lord’s Prayer, words that are familiar to many. The work illuminates each section of the prayer with beautiful, emotive movements that paint a visual picture of our human need – seemingly rooted in the very the depths of our souls – to reach up and be in communication with God. Slager has re-created the piece for the 2015-2016 season to give a fresh perspective on the never-outdated concept of prayer.
Finally, the program will also include Slager's fun-filled Mi Familia. Originally premiered at The Beauty of Introspection in September, the work has been called "joyous", "a lively celebration," and a "colorful spectacle" by Lynn Shapiro of SeeChicagoDance. Mi Familia draws on Slager's own heritage and family experiences and, incorporating traditional Spanish music and a flamenco-inspired flair, creates a fun, relatable picture that is sure to have us all dancing along in our seats.
