MOMENTA: Eye-Opening Dance Poetry

Lyricism and poetry are not usually the first words that come to mind when you think of wheel chairs, and yet they are exactly what characterize MOMENTA dance company’s “Counter Balance VI,” presented at the National Museum of Mexican Art on Saturday, September 19th, in commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the Americans With Disabilities Act.

The program of nine works, developed in collaboration with Access Living and Bodies Of Work, seamlessly integrated conventionally mobile with alternatively mobile dancers in a richly varied program of solos, duets, and one group piece.

Joffrey Looks Ahead With ‘Millennials’

 
The Joffrey Ballet had little time to get comfortable following some departures and the addition of 10 new company members at the end of August. Fresh faces peppered last night’s cast list, the majority of whom eventually appeared onstage with giddy excitement during last night’s 2015–2016 season opener at the Auditorium Theatre. Maybe it was a consequence of having arrived just prior to the company’s milestone 60th anniversary season. Whatever it was, the night beamed with so much new energy that it likely had many local dance fans anxiously anticipating the future.
 

Ballet 5:8--A Spiritual Quest

It takes a lot of courage to be a ballet company in Chicago, and Ballet 5:8 shows gutsy determination to contribute a unique perspective to the mix that includes such established luminaries as The Joffrey, The Joffrey Studio Company,  Ballet Chicago, and The Ruth Page Civic Ballet.

Harvest Time

As the last days of summer pass by, we begin to acknowledge fall as a welcome inevitability. Tees and shorts seem to abruptly turn into jeans and jackets. School is back in session, the leaves start to turn, and dance season has officially begun.

 

understand. understood

Delving into the importance of social identity and communication, “understand.understood" is an evening length dance work which explores the kinesthetic understanding of human interaction.  This is Project Bound’s PREMIERE concert co-directed by Ashley Deran and Ericka Vaughn Lashley with text by Conor McShane.  The performance will be approximately 60 minutes long feature performances by Connor Cornelius, Tia Greer, Kathryn Hetrick, Emily Loar, Peter Navarro, Kyra Peterson, Tajh Stallworth.
