Event Description

ANTARANGA: Between You and Me is set in a world in deep crisis (much like our own) where most people have lost their ability to sense the energy of other human beings and can no longer recognize or connect with each other. A few humsafar (Urdu for “fellow travelers”) remain, blessed with super-connecting and heart-opening powers. As they undertake perilous journeys, they forge connectivities that may yet heal the world. ANTARANGA is the first work in a duology, and explores themes of intimacy, connection, trust, and community among BIPOC women/femmes.

Conceived & Choreographed by Ananya Chatterjea in collaboration with Sharon Bridgforth (dramaturgy and text), Greg Schutte (score), Mina Kinukawa (scenography), Darren Johnson (film), Marcus Young (Staging).

ABOUT ANANYA DANCE THEATRE

Ananya Dance Theatre was named a Regional Cultural Treasure by a joint initiative of the Ford Foundation and McKnight Foundation in 2021. It is a professional ensemble of BIPOC women and femme artists who believe in the transformative power of dance and identify as cultural activists. Their work electrifies on the intersectional frontiers of artistic excellence, social justice, and community-embedded practice. In dancing stories where the lives and dreams of women from the global majority occupy the center, they shift the landscape of mainstream culture, build understanding about arts and social justice, and empower women’s voices. The company’s home, the Shawngrām Institute for Performance & Social Justice, is located in St. Paul, Minnesota.

ANTARANGA: Between You and Me is a National Performance Network (NPN) Creation & Development Fund Project. The Creation & Development Fund is supported by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, the Mellon Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts (a federal agency).
