In its fourth year, PRODUCE is a multi-disciplinary experiment for sound and movement artists to play together. Artists submit completed or in-progress works to be considered for the series, and selected artists are “mashed” together in various combinations and conditions over four consecutive performances. Throughout each performance and the series, the audience has an opportunity to provide real-time feedback, ask questions, figure out what experimental performance is and how it works, and help to inform the next phase of the performance (the substance of which is largely decided in the moment). Artists and audience alike witness the deconstruction and regeneration of existing works thrust into unforeseen territories as dictated by the hosts.
Described as “a noncompetitive reality show for live performance” (Zachary Whittenburg) and a “‘gateway drug’ to experimental dance and music” (Laura Molzhan), PRODUCE challenges artists to grow in their artistic vocabularies and vision, pushing them to collaborations and concepts they might not ordinarily choose, and invites the audience to witness and take part in the artistic process – something from which they often feel ostracized.
