Now that February is upon us, the new year is off and running with a jam-packed roster of exciting and varied dance events. Genre lines blur as modern meets tradition, with Deeply Rooted Dance Theatre’s modern dance Valentine and Thodos Dance Chicago’s “Timeless Motion”  at North Shore Center for the Performing Arts. The Shen Yun Show highlights ancient Chinese tradition the Harris,  while challenging programming from The Joffrey Ballet’s “Game Changers” sends us to the cutting edge in contemporary ballet at the Auditorium Theatre.

The year is off to a healthy start, with lots of exciting events coming up through winter and spring from both Chicago and touring companies, so plan ahead and mark your calendars!

2017 WINTER AND SPRING HIGHLIGHTS:

It didn’t take more than a quick glimpse of Deeply Rooted Dance Theater in breathless grands jetés across the studio at the end of company class last week to feel the solidarity of a company that has reached its twentieth anniversary charged with unified purpose and spirited determination.  

Snowflakes and icicles are on the march, along with an army of toy soldiers, marauding mice, and delicious dancing treats, as multiple “Nutcrackers” once again launch Chicago’s holiday season.

Chicago audiences have lots to be thankful for in November, with a bountiful buffet of dance styles to choose from. Whatever your favorite flavor of dance may be, here's a great opportunity  to expand your dance palette with a taste of something new, from electrified tap to mixed media, ballet, Cuban, Appalachian step dance, modern, and off-the-grid experimental. .

NOVEMBER HIGHLIGHTS:

Heated politics take the stage in October, but the presidential debates aren’t the only arena for political discourse. Dance theater offers graphic interpretation of a variety of highly-charged political issues in several major productions this month, from Joffrey’s production of Krzysztof Pastor’s reimagining of Romeo and Juliet to The Seldoms' hackstory, “The Fifth,”  Natya’s investigation of cultural miscommunication at the root of discord, and Nora Chipaumire’s examination of black maleness. 

OCTOBER HIGHLIGHTS:

Chicago’s dance season opens full force in September with exciting festivals, company seasons, and premieres of new choreography. New and noteworthy this year for both balletomanes and neophytes is Audience Architect’s Dance Around Town Sampler Pack, a first of it’s kind, limited time offering for dance lovers AND for those who want to discover more dance in Chicago. AUGUST HIGHLIGHTS:
