Cerqua Rivera returns to Old Town School of Folk Music to share and unpack its landmark piece American Catracho - "a tour de force” (Chicago Magazine) with "all the signs of a classic…should be seen on stages far beyond Chicago" (WTTW).
American Catracho was created from 2016-2019 by company Co-founder and Artistic Director Wilfredo Rivera, a native of Honduras (Catracho is slang for a man from Honduras). The piece deeply explores immigration including displacement, building a home, assimilation, resilience, trauma, and hope; a semi-autographical suite based on Rivera's own journey.
Cerqua Rivera returns to this complex, exhilarating piece to evolve it again in the current charged atmosphere. This event is part of Cerqua Rivera's innovative Inside/Out series, where audiences are invited inside the creative process with conversations with the creators, insights into the art and artistic process, and interactive opportunities to be a part of the art.
Cerqua Rivera Dance Theatre's (CRDT) award-winning art - called “blended magic” by See Chicago Dance and “immersive alchemy” by New City Stage - explores authentic personal stories at the crossroads of heritage, culture, and identity, opening paths for empathy and understanding.
