Deeply Rooted Shines a Fresh Light on Love

Deeply Rooted Dance Theater’s “Aspects of Love,” is a valentine that packs a punch, shining a fresh light on a topic you might not necessarily associate with Civil Rights,  HIV/AIDS, Greed, or Feminism. And yet, all of these issues found their place on a program that also addressed love’s more traditional landscape of sensuality, intimacy, and mutual attraction.

Danceworks 2017: Current Rhythms

This year’s annual dance showcase entitled “Current Rhythms” will feature exciting and innovative choreography that displays an entertaining and thought-provoking range of choreographic styles and techniques. Invited guest choreographers include Eduardo Vilaro, artistic director of New York City’s acclaimed Ballet Hispanico, and Onye Ozuzu, a performing artist, and current dance faculty and Dean of the School of Fine and Performing Arts at Columbia College Chicago. The show will also include two new works by faculty members Jeff Hancock and Joel Valentín-Martínez.

Tradition and Innovation Fuel February Dance

Now that February is upon us, the new year is off and running with a jam-packed roster of exciting and varied dance events. Genre lines blur as modern meets tradition, with Deeply Rooted Dance Theatre’s modern dance Valentine and Thodos Dance Chicago’s “Timeless Motion”  at North Shore Center for the Performing Arts. The Shen Yun Show highlights ancient Chinese tradition the Harris,  while challenging programming from The Joffrey Ballet’s “Game Changers” sends us to the cutting edge in contemporary ballet at the Auditorium Theatre.

'Sleeptalk' basks in the mystery of dreams

A man played a set of Tibetan bowls while seated atop a ginormous floor pillow as guests filed in for “Sleeptalk,” an evening length dance by Ashley Fargnoli that ended its run at Links Hall Jan. 15. Complemented by a psychedelic screen saver casting red, blue and green beams onto the white space’s back wall, the scene elicits a meditative feel despite the somewhat frantic push to get in the door and find a place to sit.

“Verge” Says in Ballet, There’s Room for Everyone

Paige Cunningham Caldarella has ties to the dance legend with the same name, dancing for the Merce Cunningham Dance Company fresh out of Juilliard in the early 2000s. Cunningham’s influence on Caldarella’s movement is crystal clear: with crisp, unemotional passes of classical vocabulary with a bit of a twist. Her latest work, “Verge,” showing at Links Hall through Jan. 8, is a mirror image of Caldarella’s 2012 “Off Center,” which juxtaposed ballet with vogue.
